It is so important to think for yourself.  But I’m wondering if it is becoming a bit of a lost art. Maybe it is a by-product of our information era.  There is so much information out there, and it’s coming at us at a really fast pace from multiple directions.  To cope with the information overload we tend to look for short cuts to sifting through and understanding it all. As a result, we seek out and rely on experts, following their advice because, well, they should know, shouldn’t they?

There is some merit in this approach.  For example, we can’t all be qualified doctors.  We accept the advice that our doctor gives us, knowing that all those years of medical school have provided him or her with the knowledge to make recommendations regarding treatment.  However even in this area we are becoming a little more self responsible than our ancestors.  These days people will research on the internet to learn about their condition and then get more than one doctor’s opinion before they decide on a treatment regime, knowing that ultimately it is their choice – it is their body.

Research needs to be done properly, though.  Again, there is so much information out there.  Not all of that information is good.  Not all of it is accurate.  Frequently it is opinion rather than fact.  Sometimes it is down right lies.  People know that “not everything you read is true”, but I think they are far too willing to accept as fact what they find on the internet, particularly if it seems a logical argument and/or is put forward by a well known expert.  It irritates me when people who write blogs or articles quote studies, research or statistics without giving the source.  At times I have contacted the author to request the reference for the material, and it turns out that they don’t have it.  They are just requoting what someone else quoted, and they don’t actually know for themselves where it came from.  They have not taken the time to verify whether it is true or not.  I think that’s really poor.

One time I dug around for a while and discovered that a story which had been repeated many times by many highly regarded people on the internet was not actually true, but I won’t go into it here as that is a whole story in itself.

But it underlies the importance of thinking for yourself.  If you don’t, you can be duped big time.  Or perhaps you miss out on something that is really really good, because you have listened to the advice of someone who did not gather and verify their facts before giving an opinion.

I have one really specific example of this that really annoys me, but I can’t name names.  It’s like celebrities who thrive on all publicity, even if it is negative publicity they see it as all good because it builds their fame.  So I can’t name names in case it furthers his cause.  Here in Australia there is a bloke who has set himself up as a bit of a guru in the financial field.  He’s a very likeable bloke.  He shares a lot of good knowledge.  He’s also been elevated to the place where his personal opinion is accepted as truth.  Unfortunately, in one particular instance it is not truth.  I know for a fact that some of his statements are inaccurate.  I also know that he has rejected multiple opportunities to become acquainted with the facts.  Perhaps he is not a big enough person to be able to admit that he was wrong, so he does not want to find out he was wrong?

What exasperates me is when people read his advice on the internet, and then follow it – without stopping to check the facts and think for themselves.   Because if they did, they may discover that the situation is not exactly as described.

It doesn’t matter what you are researching.  There is always good and bad information out there – favourable and unfavourable.  Google “God” and see what you get.  It is amazing what people have to say about God!

But have you noticed that with a lot of the comments on blogs and in forums where people are giving an unfavourable review or opinion on a product or service they have never actually used it themselves?  They are just quoting a story they heard somewhere, from a friend of a friend who had a sister whose uncle said …… Those with first hand experience can generally provide more accurate knowledge.

PLEASE – think for yourself.

Do some research.
Don’t accept second hand stories or other people’s opinions.
Get the facts (verified, with sources).
Then make your own decision.
It is the only intelligent way forward in life.

Because that is what I have decided!!!

There is so much bad news out there.  We need to be constantly taking in messages that are positive to counteract the deluge of negativity that comes at us from multiple media channels.

An except from “Zen And The Martial Arts” by Joe Hyams:

...I was practicing Kumite (sparring) with a more skilful

opponent. To make up for my lack of knowledge and

experience, I tried deceptive, tricky moves that were

readily countered. I was outclassed, and Parker watched

me get roundly trounced. When the match was over I was

dejected. Parker invited me into his small office.

“Why are you so upset? ” he asked.

“Because I couldn’t score.”

Parker got up from behind the desk and with a piece of

chalk drew a line on the floor about five feet long. “How

can you make this line shorter?” he asked.

I studied the line and gave him several answers, including

cutting the line in many pieces. He shook his head and

drew a second line, longer than the first. “Now how does

the first line look ? “Shorter,” I said.

Parker nodded. “It is always better to improve and

strengthen your own line or knowledge than to try and cut

your opponent’s line.” He accompanied me to the door

and added, “Think about what I have just said.”

Powerful stuff, hey?  My encouragement to you:  lengthen your line.  Don’t try to shorten someone else’s line by cutting them down.  Learn from successful people and model what they do, thereby increasing your own capacity. As your success increases, be prepared for the fact that others will try to shorten your line.  But don’t let that be you. You’re bigger than that.

It will accelerate your pathway to SUCCESS.

I heard an interesting interview by Jean Chatzky the other day, regarding her book “The Difference:  How anyone can prosper in even the toughest times”. The book unfolded as the result of attempting to answer the question:  Why do some people seem to move relatively easily from a pay cheque to pay cheque existence into wealth, while others get stuck or (even worse) fall back into deeper debt?

When the data from her research was tabulated and evaluated to discover the factors that were most important in determining which people made it to wealth and which people didn’t, the results were something of a surprise. It turned out that the factors that mattered most in moving from poverty to wealth had little to do with financial strategies.  Instead of being a financial guidebook, “The Difference” reads more like a PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT book.  She found that most of those in the wealthy category were:
* Optimistic
* Resilient
* Connected
* Intuitive
* Grateful and
* Giving.

Jean says that these attributes/personality traits/qualities are not something that you are either born with, or not.  They can be developed.  The really encouraging news is that 90% of those in the wealthy category were not there 10 years ago.  No one handed them their wealth, they created their wealth themselves.  If you want to move from poverty to wealth you have to decide – make a choice about how you want your life to be, and then become the person who is able to create that level of wealth.

So PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT is the pathway to wealth.  Interesting, isn’t it?  This business opportunity is built on personal development – the perfect mix for success.  Check it out.

You can also read Jean’s list of the Seven Traits of the Wealthy Personality.

To your success!

When I hear this expression, I become intensely interested.  I really want to hear what follows the “Yes, BUT” because it always amazes me – the excuses people choose to use to keep themselves stuck.  I find it incredible that people are happy to just sit with the excuse and not think about solutions so they can move forward.

Here are some Yes, BUT …. examples:
•    we’ve ALWAYS done it this way
•    it’s in my DNA
•    I had a bad childhood
•    I don’t have enough time
•    I can’t afford it
•    the economy is not good just now
•    my partner/parents/friends/colleagues are not supportive

Don’t accept these excuses as the place you are at.  I suggest you eliminate BUT, substitute AND then add SO.  For example:
I want to start a business, BUT I don’t have the start-up capital.
Becomes:  I want to start a business, AND I don’t have the start-up capital SO …..

This simple change stops us from thinking we have an acceptable excuse for not solving the problem and assists us to take responsibility and look for a solution.  A business associate of mine, Rachel Oliver (co-owner of a positive media company) always says:  “No money+ plenty of imagination = no problem.  No money+ no imagination = big problem. ”

Most of our problems are not “out there”.  Our biggest problem is not the events or circumstances of our lives.  Our biggest problem is between our ears – how we think about things.

Success is certainly a choice, there is no doubt about it.  We have all made a series of choices to get ourselves to where we are now.  We need to acknowledge that and take responsibility for it.  Because if we don’t like where we are and want to get to a better place, it is time to start making some better choices.

Here is a great quote (don’t know the source):

“People are not what they think they are…but rather…what people think…they are!”

Tamara Monosoff’s blog “You Can Choose Success” is a good read.

Tamara uses a boxing analogy to describe the fight to establish a successful business.  She seems to understand the difficulties experienced by small business owners, and expertly puts her finger on what is required to achieve success.

SUCCESS

Hi and welcome. I believe that success arises from the daily choices we make, it is not a matter of luck, so don’t just wait for it to magically happen to you.  This blog is designed to encourage and inspire you on your journey to success, so have a look around.  Please note that comments on this blog are closed (due to spam).

I have recently set up a new blog with a single focus:  CONNECTING to Your Higher Purpose – you will find all of my future posts here:  www.suzimorris.biz

SUZI  :)

I think there are a lot of people who would argue with me on that. They think success is something that happens to them, if they are lucky.

Some people consider themselves really unlucky and believe that success will never come to them. People who think of themselves as not being successful usually have plenty of reasons why. Perhaps it’s because …………

* I don’t live in the right location
* It’s a consequence of the way my parents brought me up
* I haven’t received the recognition I deserve
* the opportunities have just not been there for me
* ___________ won’t cooperate with me
* (you fill in the blank)

Just think for a moment – are these really reasons, or are they excuses? Do you know of ANYBODY who has succeeded despite “living in the wrong location”? Anybody who has succeeded despite the way their parents raised them? Anybody who has gone on to succeed despite not having gained recognition for their efforts? So are these things reasons why we can’t be successful, or obstacles to be overcome on the way to success?

What is success anyway? Is it having a certain level of income, having a particular type of car, living in a fantastic house? A lot of people have those things but are not happy.

While success is usually tied to an achievement or a material acquisition, success is not the actual thing, but it is really the FEELING that those things represent. For example, you train hard, you win a race. You put the trophy on the shelf. Every time you look at it, you feel great. Is it the trophy itself that makes you feel great? No, it is the achievement it represents. You look at the trophy, remember what it took to win it and FEEL a success energy.

So if success is a feeling, then success is also a CHOICE. You can choose how you feel. (If you are not convinced of that it is another whole topic that I’m not going into right now.) If success is a feeling you can teach yourself to feel successful every minute of every day. Focus on your successes, build the success energy in your life. Remember that you get more of what you focus on, so more success will come your way.

CHOOSE SUCCESS, don’t wait for it to magically happen to you.

I believe every individual has the ability to realize their inherent potential and live a life of personal fulfillment.  Find out more about The Secret for Success
