We had a fantastic time in Queensland.  The first thing on the agenda was a conference at the Royal Pines Resort.  Saturday night was an Arabian dress up night with a buffet dinner and entertainment.  The conference took place the ballroom during the day, and they completely re-decorated the room in the Arabian theme within the space of two hours – I was very impressed!  They had camel rides and belly dancers and all the conference participants attended in fancy dress.

Next we went to Robina to have a look at the investment property we have owned for over two years but had never seen.  We were delighted with it, and with the town of Robina.

After that it was four days at the Super GP at Surfer’s Paradise.  Besides the V8 race cars there were Minis, Formula Fords, Classic Cars, and lots of on-track entertainment.

The day after the Super GP we returned to Surfer’s Paradise to do some shopping, and to our delight got to drive around the race track in our super-fast racy red Hyundai Getz!!!

Card by CarolynI was blessed to meet a lovely lady by the name of Carolyn Roach tonight.  She paints and writes inspired verses to produce beautiful greeting cards, stationery sets and book marks.

Her work is also made more widely available as printed products   One of her A5 prints, “Embrace Life”, was launched 1996/7 in the hand painted format and was  scanned/printed in 2001 for a ”Springtime Promotion’ at six airport shops interstate and then for the general public.  This was just before September 11 in 2001 and “Embrace Life” has touched many, many lives, reminding people of what is really important in life.

bilbyThe bilby is often called the rabbit-eared bandicoot. It is a nocturnal marsupial that has large ears, a silky light grey and white coat and a long black and white tail. They have a long snout and well-developed sense of smell to aid in finding food. Their large, hairless ears are extremely useful for listening for predators.

The bilby is omnivorous and its diet includes bulbs, seeds, plants, insects, termites and spiders. The bilby does most of its foraging at night. They don’t drink water as they obtain it from the food they eat.

During the day the bilby shelters in an underground burrow that spirals to a depth of two metres. They live in grasslands and mulga shrublands in the hot, dry, arid and semi-arid areas of Australia. Two hundred years ago the bilby occupied more than 70 per cent of mainland Australia. Now it has disappeared from 80 per cent of its former range. Small populations remain in isolated arid and semi-arid areas in Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland.

Of the six bandicoot species that once lived in Australia, the bilby is the sole survivor. It is listed as ‘‘endangered’’ in Queensland and “vulnerable” nationally. The rapid decline of bilby numbers since the early 1900s is due to predators (foxes and cats), competition with rabbits for food and the alteration of their habitat (grazing of livestock and the cessation of Aboriginal fire regimes). The total Queensland wild population, estimated to be between 600 and 700 animals, is scattered over 100,000 square kilometres west of Birdsville and Boulia.

Bubbles of Nothing

The chocolate industry has repeatedly failed to adequately tackle labour exploitation in West African cocoa fields… bubbles of nothing. Go to http://tinyurl.com/cjsnek and watch the “Bubbles of Nothing” video.

Take the opportunity to remind Big Chocolate about love and purpose this Valentine’s Day by sending this e-card to the industry body, the Confectionery Manufacturers Association.

If you’re concerned that the goods you buy – including the chocolate that you eat – might be made using trafficked or slave labour, the best approach is to seek out products that you know are produced ethically.

And ask your Valentine to do the same!

Visit donttradelives.com.au to download an updated copy of the Good Chocolate Guide. The guide provides details on the ethical chocolate brands, including Fairtrade Certified chocolate, available in Australia and where you can buy them.
